stabile Taktraten angeht.

Once again, we tried XP 64-bit, Vista 64-bit, and Windows 7 64-bit and the results are always the same. As we near 4GHz, the voltage requirements increase dramatically and the clocking ability of the processor decreases in much the same manner.
PC Perspective
I was expecting to hit 4 GHz with this product on the Gigabyte board. I was sorely disappointed. I was able to hit 3.7 GHz with a pretty hefty 1.48 volts.

In past Phenom II reviews, we’ve stuck to AMD’s processor-in-box solution for our overclocking efforts, very consistently falling short of the 4 GHz level so many enthusiasts aim for with flagship CPUs.

Using 1.5V on Asus’ M4A79T Deluxe—already a fairly aggressive voltage setting—we were able to hit 4 GHz with the 3.4 GHz Phenom II X4 965. That setting was unstable, though, and we scaled back to 3.9 GHz. Unfortunately, crashes in a couple of our benchmarks forced us to drop back to 3.8 GHz, where we were able to complete the full suite of tests.

With a bump in CPU core voltage to 1.5v, we were able to take the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition to just over 3.8GHz with complete stability--only a ~400MHz increase. 3.9GHz - 4GHz would load Windows, but no amount of voltage allowed us to maintain stability during testing.

The 965 CPU topped out at 3.849GHz (19.0x202.6), which is actually 11MHz shy of what we hit with our 955 sample. Like the 955, we could clock the 965 at speeds up to 4.0GHz and even run a couple of benchmarks at that speed, but in order to obtain full stability in all our CPU tests we had to dial the clocks down to 3.849GHz. We needed just over 1.5V of juice to obtain stability at that speed.
Hexus
As with the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition, we were able to push the quicker 965 - fitted with a Xigmatek Red Scorpion cooler - up to 3.8GHz with voltage at 1.55V.
Cluboverclocker
Just like our 955, the 965 reached 3.8GHz at 1.475V. Any further attempts to raise voltage to hit any higher speeds were met with futility.

In AMD OverDrive you can simply max out the CPU voltage to 1.50V~155V and increase the multiplier. Play around with it, don't be afraid of a crash. We used a simple 35 USD OCZ Vendetta 2 air-cooler and reached 4000 MHz stable. If you use a decent cooler or even better, water-cooling really; 3800-4000 MHz should not be an issue.
Xbitlabs
Frankly speaking, the results of our overclocking experiments turned out a little disappointing. When we increased the processor Vcore by 0.175 V above the nominal, i.e. to 1.585 V, Phenom II X4 965 remained stable only at 3.8 GHz frequency. On the other hand, we can’t really expect any serious overclocking improvements. Even specially selected Phenom II X4 TWKR 42 Black Edition overclocking processors can overclock with air cooling only to 4.0 GHz. So, even if we can claim a certain improvement of the overclocking potential, this improvement is extremely insignificant.

I was able to get our Phenom II X4 965 chip running stable at 3.9GHz, courtesy of beaucoup cooling and 1.5V of juice.
Neoseeker
After a few hours of tweaking, I got the 965 to 3914MHz on air, which later proved to be the highest rock solid stable overclock I could achieve.
Legitreviews
With the system running the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 heat sink (air cooling) we were able to reach 4GHz with ease. By manually increasing the voltage on the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor to 1.45V, we were able to reach 4.1GHz with full stability. With the CPU voltage increased to 1.475V in the BIOS, we were able to hit 4.2GHz after raising the multiplier up to x21 from x17.
