So this is n-vidia's new top performer. For 50% more to pay, you get equivalent performance to the 5870, with exceptional power consumption and heat to impress!
Of course this comes as a no-surprise for those who have been watching Nvidia lately. We had had a couple of reviews of the magnificent-Fermi architecture on every reputable site from Anandtech to techreport, where Scott Wasson confidently states that Fermi will outrun Cypress by a significant lead.
Another thing to mention is how reliable Nvidia's current drivers are in terms of rendering full DX11 Quality.Nvidia's drivers already force their property sub-standard Coverage Sampled Anti-aliasing and their mixture of Bilinear and trilinear texture filtering in many games, like Far Cry 2, Hawx, Company of Heroes, Age of Conan.....
At least in Crysis, MSAA was labeled as Q AA with CSAA labeled as AA.Recently Nvidia's has been forcing their sub-quality AA through their drivers everywhere.
With 8x CSAA you have the same amount of colour and Z samples taken as with 4x MSAA.
I believe they're representing an "enhanced" version of CSAA with Fermi. A "better" performance AA as Nvidia calls.
From what I've read about their new CSAA, it' renders the same number of texture and Z samples per texel as CSAA does, but with what they call direct positioning, which what i call: The blind throwing of pixels onto the screen. They claim that they have achieved "equivalent" accuracy in texel positioning with far less cycles to waste on the process.
In fact, that's one of the reasons why Guru3D used 8x AA in Far Cry 2.The performance hit the Radeons take with 8x AA in Far Cry 2 is much bigger than that of Nvidia's Geforces, thanks to CS AA.
When it comes to Fermi's tessellation performance, of course Fermi will have better performance, in Unigine heaven. It has plenty of shaders to spare for the process, since the benchmark is mainly designed to show tessellation to the naked eye.Put some high quality textures there along with more objects, main geometry, and the Fermi will fall like a fly.
High quality textures doesn't only translate to high resolution textures. The color variety across the texture, which is the ratio of the number of color values displayed on the texture to the number of pixels in that texture, is a primary indicator of it's quality.Textures with low color variety look cartoonish and primitive.
Last but not least, kisama Nvidia for ruining Metro 2033 with the bad quality textures and MSAA implementation.Btw, kisama means thank you in Japanese.
Hopefully a patch will be released later to allow us to increase the texture quality, cuz it seems that Medium/low quality is the highest it can go for now.
