Witzigerweise steht in besagtem Microsoft knowledge base Artikel:
For example, if you have a video card that has 256 MB of onboard memory, that memory must be mapped within the first 4 GB of address space. If 4 GB of system memory is already installed, part of that address space must be reserved by the graphics memory mapping. Graphics memory mapping overwrites a part of the system memory. These conditions reduce the total amount of system memory that is available to the operating system.

Wer setzt diese Gerüchte in Umlauf, daß der Grafikkartenspeicher
nicht abgezogen wird?
Und noch eins:
Das Memory Remapping schiebt die für Ressourcen verwendeten Bereiche
in die Zone über 4 GB. Da ein 32 Bit Betriebssystem diesen Bereich nicht
nutzen kann (OK, ich rede von XP und Vista, andere haben ja das Problem
umgangen), hilft das nichts und hat also mit dem Problem nicht das Geringste zu tun.
Ich hab 8 GB, 2 x Geforce 8800 GTX, nutzbarer Speicher unter XP 32
2,5 GB. Kommt doch recht schön hin. Mit meiner alten 8800 GTS hatte
ich 3,25.
Und da ich auch nicht wirklich eine Ahnung habe, wovon ich hier rede,

mal einen gut recherchierten und fundiert aufbereiteten Artikel wert?
