Rampage VI Extreme dimm.2 Software Raid 0

Rampage VI Extreme and Samsung 960 Pro in Raid

Hi JanJake

Ja sollte möglich sein:

You CANNOT make a bootable RAID array using PCI-e Lanes from the CPU.
2. You CAN make a bootable RAID array using PCI-e Lanes assigned from the PCH.
3. You can make simple software RAID arrays using the two M.2s on the DIMM.2, the M.2, a M.2 to PCI-e card or any combination of these so long as you have the CPU lanes available.
4. You CANNOT use VROC from the DIMM.2 (more below)
5. You CANNOT use VROC using single M.2 to PCI-e cards with NON-intel drives
6. You CANNOT create a VROC RAID array in BIOS using non-intel drives

Simply put, in the BIOS if you want to use VROC you have to assign a PCI-e lane to be VROC enabled. I looked everywhere and could not find a spot to choose the DIMM.2 to use VROC. I could only find that we could make the DIMM.2 access CPU or PCH lanes. The PCI-e lanes can be assigned for the Hyper x16 with VROC on, Hyper x16 with VROC off, a single SSD with VROC on or DISABLED. This leads me to believe that the Hyper x16 has a chip or such on it that allows it to be recognized by the BIOS.

When I turned these PCI-e lanes on to Single SSD with VROC, my drives suddenly disappeared. I coldn't see them in BIOS or under Disk Management in WIndows. When I went into the RAID options of BIOS, my M.2s were seen but greyed out saying (Unsupported). DIsabling those PCI-e lanes from VROC and changing the RAID option to PCH, I could then create the array in BIOS.

Software RAID 0 with two Samsung 961s using the CPU lanes were getting me 6900 Seq reads and 3000 Seq writes, so a software RAID solution works just fine as a non-bootable drive.

In the article previous linked in this forum, the author stated he was able to create a bootable RAID 0 array using the Hyper x16, but he was showing that he had two intel drives and two samsung drives in the Hyper x16 at the time. I think Windows was confused and it would NOT work. What he was able to do was to enable VROC using the Hyper x16 with four Samsung drives and get Seq Reads of over 13000.

Bottom line conclusion. Bootable RAID off CPU lanes is not possible. It is possible using PCH lanes but isn't worthwhile due to DMI bandwidth. VROC is not possible using the DIMM.2 or single M.2 to PCI-e cards. It is apparently possible using the Asus Hyper x16 which does make sense. Simple windows RAID works fine.

So ich habs nun geschafft.

Sata Mode selection > AHCI
Advanced/Cpu Storage Configuration > Dimm.2 + U2
Advanced/Onboard Devices Configuration / m.2_1(DIMM.2) source selection > From Cpu

Danach musste ich IRST_5.2.0.1194_20171130 installieren und Intel® Rapid-Storage Starten um dort ein Raid 0 zumachen. (Intel Drivers)

Nun habe ich noch 90Tage Trial Version :D

Woher kriegt man so einen VROC Key?

Hi,
